Fire Risk Assessment

With the coming into effect of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 on the 1st October 2006 much of the previous fire safety legislation has been repealed.

The Fire Safety Order provides for a risk appropriate compliance regime with the duty to conduct a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment resting with the 'Responsible Person' who will generally be the employer but could be an occupier or owner of a premises.

The fire risk assessment needs to be structured in such a way that all probabilities are taken into account and the risks are quantified to allow objective decisions to be made to provide appropriate but cost effective fire protection solutions.

The fire risk assessment involves an inspection of the workplace to identify:

·        Fire hazards

·        People at Risk

·        Evaluate the risks and act to remove, reduce or control them.

·        Record your findings

·        You must have a clear plan of how you intend to prevent fire and how you will ensure that people are safe if a fire occurs

·        You need to train your employees and others in what to do in case of fire

·        You must make arrangements to review your risk assessment regularly or when changes occur.

If your company employs more than 5 people the risk assessment must be written down and kept on the premises to which it relates and be ready for inspection by an officer of the fire authority.

Fire Risk Assessments must be completed by competent persons who have the necessary training, experience, skills and other qualities to be able to understand the requirements of the assessment.

The team is here to help by carrying out fire risk assessments on your behalf or train selected employees to carry out this duty.
